Heavy rain inundates several parts of Vizag; normal life disrupted

Heavy rain triggered by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal caused widespread inundation and disruption in several parts of Visakhapatnam, with the semi-urban areas of Gajuwaka and Madhurawada being among the worst affected.

While the city received moderate rain through Wednesday, the intensity increased from Wednesday evening (September 23, 2026) and continued until early Thursday morning. The rainfall intensity decreased on Thursday, though intermittent drizzle continued. The district received an average rainfall of 202.8 between 8 a.m. of September 23 to 8 a.m. of September 24. Meanwhile between 8 a.m. on Thursday till 6 p.m., the average rainfall was just 14.7 mm.

Rainwater flowing from geddas, drains and hill slopes, inundated roads and entered residential premises in several low-lying areas, leaving residents struggling. Several colonies in Jaggayyapalem near Sheela Nagar Junction were inundated, affecting families and apartment complexes.

“We are frightened that snakes or other insects may enter our houses. A drainage is overflowing and we have asked children to stay indoors and not to go onto the roads,” said Narayana, a resident of Jaggayyapalem.

A major gedda overflowed onto the road between Sheela Nagar and Tunglam, disrupting traffic between Kurmannapalem, Duvvada and Sheela Nagar. Several houses in HB Colony at Pedagantyada were also inundated after rainwater entered the locality in the early hours. Water began receding gradually by morning, residents said. The road connecting Gangavaram and Pedagantyada was also waterlogged, though the situation improved gradually.

MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao visited several inundated colonies and assured residents of necessary assistance from the authorities.

Heavy waterlogging was reported on the Sagar Nagar–Rushikonda stretch, and the Sheela Nagar–Tunglam corridor. Commuters on Port Road faced difficulties due to a combination of waterlogging and potholes.

Rainwater caused damage to boundary walls at several locations. The boundary wall of the Racon Towers apartment complex at Kommadi collapsed following the heavy flow from a nearby gedda. GVMC officials responded and evacuated residents to a safer location. A boundary wall was also damaged at Madhurawada and another was brought down at Yeduruvanipalem village in Mulagada mandal.

A landslip at the Sitakonda Viewpoint, Beach Road brought rocks onto the road and disrupted traffic.

Around 30 families were shifted to safe places after landslips were reported on hillocks at Kailasapuram and Hanumanthawaka.

Over 16 flats were vacated as a precautionary measure as the compound wall was affected due to a landslide at MR Peta. A electricity pole fell on an autorickshaw driver leaving him injured, at One Town. The Indira Priyadarshini Municipal Stadium was also inundated.

A 29-year-old youth was rescued after the car he was driving fell into a canal at Kanithi in Gajuwaka.

As per the officials, as many as 71 trees fell across the city, while around 5.5 km of GVMC roads were damaged.
