Salem Mayor demands action against Corporation Commissioner; writes letter to T.N. Governor

Salem City Mayor A. Ramachandran has written a letter to the Tamil Nadu Governor to take department-level action against Salem Corporation Commissioner Lalitaditya Neelam, and demanded permission and protection for a sit-in protest to be conducted.

In a letter dated September 22, the Mayor stated that as per the Urban Local Bodies rule, it is the duty of the Commissioner to send the resolutions passed in the council meeting to the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA), District Collector, and the Tamil Nadu Government. But, the Commissioner had not been allegedly sending the resolutions passed in the council meeting held in May, June, July, and August 2026.

Despite the councillors’ objections and a complaint lodged with the DMA, the Commissioner allegedly maintained his approach. For the council meeting to be held in September, the date was fixed as the 25th, and the meeting agenda was sent to the Commissioner, which is to be sent to all councillors on September 18. However, the agenda is yet to be sent to the councillors. As per rules, the agenda should be sent before even days of the meeting, the Mayor added.

Demanding action against the Corporation Commissioner, the Mayor said that the Governor must take steps to conduct September’s council meeting. “Against the Commissioner, I (Mayor) and the councillors are going to stage an indefinite sit-in protest in the Mayor’s chamber from 10 a.m. on September 25 (Friday). The Governor must give permission and adequate protection for the protest,” the Mayor mentioned in the letter.

When contacted, the Mayor said that he sent the letter to the Governor and, the protest will be held on Friday.
