Residents of Nagama Naicken Palayam in Sulur taluk submitted a petition to the Coimbatore Collector on Monday against the proposed diversion of treated wastewater into pond used for drinking water.

Residents of Nagama Naicken Palayam in Sulur taluk petitioned the Coimbatore Collector on Monday opposing a proposal to divert treated wastewater into the 10-acre Oorazhi Kuttai in the village.
The residents said the pond and seven borewells around it, besides three borewells in the pond, were sources of drinking water. They said treated wastewater from the Coimbatore Corporation’s sewage treatment plant at Ondipudur was being pumped to Kadukuttai, about 2 km from the village, and alleged that there was an attempt to divert it to Oorazhi Kuttai.
They apprehended that this could affect groundwater quality and public health. They also opposed a proposal to deepen the pond, citing the risk of damage to its bund and the adjoining main road.
The residents said they had protested against both proposals two days ago and urged the Collector to stop the diversion and ensure that the pond’s bund was assessed before any deepening work.
