Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday inaugurated four road infrastructure projects worth ₹1,941 crore in Delhi, including the long-pending Barapullah Phase-3 elevated corridor, which is expected to cut travel time between Mayur Vihar Phase-1 and south Delhi by around 20-25 minutes.
The 3.5-km elevated stretch from Mayur Vihar Phase-I to Sarai Kale Khan connects with the existing Barapullah network, extending signal-free connectivity towards AIIMS and INA. Worth ₹1,635 crore, the nearly 10.9-km Phase-3 project is intended to allow commuters from east Delhi and Noida to bypass several major congestion points, including the DND Flyway, Ashram Chowk, Ring Road, and Sarai Kale Khan.
Aside from the Barapullah corridor, Mr. Shah inaugurated the Mukarba Chowk underpass and laid the foundation stones for the Modi Mill-Savitri Cinema flyover and Loni underpass. “The Barapullah corridor will provide signal-free connectivity between east and south Delhi, making commuting smoother, providing relief from traffic jams, and saving travel time,” the Union Minister said.
The Barapullah project was approved by the Delhi government in 2014 and work began in 2015, with completion originally targeted for 2017.
However, the project was delayed by issues involving land acquisition, tree-cutting permissions, and the shifting of high-tension wires. Its cost had since risen from the original ₹1,260 crore to around ₹1,635 crore.
‘Ease of commute’
Speaking about the four projects inaugurated by Mr. Shah, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, “These projects will make commuting easier in areas like Badli, Shalimar Bagh, Azadpur, Jahangirpuri, Rohini, and Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar. Delhi’s infrastructure is now being developed keeping in mind the needs of the future, with facilities such as cycle tracks, safe pedestrian paths, better lighting arrangements, and improved drainage.”
The Barapullah corridor has nine loops to facilitate movement in different directions and includes separate facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
A special structure has also been constructed over the Yamuna floodplains with longer pillar spans intended to minimise obstruction to the river’s flow, an official said.
The Mukarba Chowk underpass on the Outer Ring Road, comprising two vehicular underpasses and a pedestrian underpass, is expected to benefit around 15,800 vehicles a day.
The Modi Mill-Savitri Cinema flyover is intended to provide signal-free movement towards Kalkaji. The Loni Road roundabout underpass will be four lanes wide and is intended to ease traffic movement between Loni and Shahdara.
