Nurses affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Nurses Empowerment Association observed a fast on Wednesday demanding the State government to withdraw its decision to appoint nurses in government hospitals on an 11-month temporary basis and nursing tutors on a contractual basis.
About 250 nurses participated in the hunger protest organised in Chennai. They demanded that redeployment of nursing staff, which is a workforce reduction measure in government hospitals, should be stopped and as promised in the election manifesto, the government should make all contractual nurses permanent.
They also demanded that a Government Order providing regular timescale pay for 2,500 posts announced for regularisation in the Health Department’s demand for grants should be issued.
