District Collector Pratik Tayal on Thursday reviewed the clearing of water hyacinth from the Uyyakondan canal in the city.

The canal, with an ayacut of 32,742 acres in Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts, traverses about 70 km from Pettavaithalai and cuts across the city where lush growth of water hyacinth had been obstructing the water flow.

The Water Resources Department is removing the weed on six stretches between Azhvarthoppu and Alathur, for length of about 15 km, at a cost of ₹58.36 lakh.

Accompanied by senior officials, Mr. Tayal inspected the work between Azhvarthoppu and Palakkarai.
