The Rural Development and Local Bodies Workers’ Union has announced a strike from Monday (October 5), pressing for various demands, including deduction of Provident Fund (PF) contributions from the wages of direct daily wage workers employed by the Thoothukudi corporation.
As part of the agitation, the union submitted a petition to Corporation Commissioner S. Priyanka on Thursday.
More than 400 direct daily-wage workers, including sanitation workers, drivers, DBC workers, computer operators, and drinking water project workers are employed by Thoothukudi corporation.
Following the union’s demand, Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) contributions are being deducted from their wages. The union has now demanded that PF contributions also be deducted regularly and credited to worker’s PF accounts.
The union representatives also said that the PF contributions deducted from nearly 1,300 daily wage workers engaged through outsourcing agencies in the Corporation were not being reflected in their PF accounts. The union urged the Corporation to rectify the issue and ensure the security of the PF accounts of workers engaged through private agencies.
The union representatives said a strike would be launched from Monday to press for demands.
