The two-day extended district committee meeting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] concluded in Kozhikode on Wednesday, with the leaders claiming that the political approach of a large section of the electorate, who voted against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the recent Assembly elections, is gradually changing.

Addressing the media here, leaders such as district secretary M. Mehboob and State committee members P. Mohanan, A. Pradeepkumar, and V. Vaseef pointed out that it was evident in the results of the byelection to the Kuttichira ward of the Kozhikode Corporation. The victory margin of the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate had come down drastically compared with the 2025 local body election.

Mr. Mehboob said the LDF suffered a defeat in the election in Kozhikode mainly due to the consolidation of anti-Left forces, with the Indian Union Muslim League and the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind leading the attack from the front. An impression was created that the CPI(M) had a “deal” with the BJP. A large number of voters from minority communities, who had earlier supported the Left, were misled by this campaign, and they voted against it. However, going by the results of the Kuttichira byelection, this trend seemed to be reversing, he claimed. The CPI(M) leaders pointed out that the anti-people policies of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government were the main reason for the situation.

Meanwhile, the party has decided to induct 10 leaders into the district committee. K. Jameela from Thamarassery would be included in the committee in the place of Kanathil Jameela, former MLA, who passed away in 2025. Koyilandy area secretary T.K. Chandran, Balussery area secretary T.K. Sumesh, Kakkodi area secretary P.K.E. Chandran, Kozhikode Town area secretary M. Ajaya Kumar, and Babu Parassery, E. Prem Kumar, U. Sudharma, and K. Arun, who are representatives of class and mass organisations, and district office secretary T.P. Krishnan, would be added as permanent invitees.

According to party sources, the open debate on the organisational report presented by Mr. Mehboob continued on Wednesday. A total of 35 delegates participated in the debate. Based on the suggestions put forward at the discussions, it was decided to conduct study classes for branch secretaries, local committee members, and all the party members in the coming months. Also, efforts will be made to address the concerns of students, youth, women, professionals, and cultural activists.
