Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Deputy Floor Leader T. Harish Rao questioned Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka’s statements on a series of serious questions raised by the BRS on the power situation in the State.

In a statement, Mr. Rao alleged that instead of addressing the specific issues raised by the BRS, Mr. Bhatti was producing unrelated documents and offering excuses. He said the Deputy Chief Minister should explain the government’s position on power supply, coal availability, generation capacity and the ₹5,420 crore true-up charges being imposed on electricity consumers.

He said farmers across rural Telangana were facing problems due to power supply issues, including low voltage that was damaging transformers and motors and imposing an additional financial burden on them. Farmers were also being forced to wait at their fields for power supply, he said.

He questioned why Mr. Bhatti had not responded to the BRS’s questions on coal availability and power generation. He said the Union Ministry of Coal, through a communication dated February 15, 2018, had allocated 14 million tonnes per annum of G-9 grade coal from Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. (SCCL) mines to the Yadadri Thermal Power Station.

Mr. Harish Rao also sought an explanation for the reported shortfall in power generation at the Yadadri, Bhadradri and Kothagudem thermal power stations, asking whether it did not amount to a failure of power management.

He sought clarity on reports of an Energy Reforms Committee being proposed to take power sector companies, including Singareni, towards initial public offerings and fresh borrowings.
