TDP State president Palla Srinivasa Rao said discussions were under way with the NDA alliance partners on seat sharing for the upcoming local body elections, but a broad understanding had been reached, and all of them were committed to offering 34% reservation for the Backward Classes (BCs).

However, the category-wise selection of candidates could be done only after the Supreme Court has taken a decision on the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the State, he observed.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao, in a press release, said that a clear picture on the quota for BCs was likely to emerge in the next two to three days and expressed hope that the outcome would be positive, while noting that the High Court verdict caused disappointment.

He accused the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) of adopting double standards on BC reservations. It (YSRCP) was trying to appease the BCs on one hand and approaching courts against the proposed reservation on the other. On its part, the TDP was pursuing all legal avenues to achieve the objective.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the party would field candidates who have a strong understanding of local conditions and those closely connected with the people.

In its 44-year journey, the TDP has for the first time given a significant share of nominated posts to partners as part of the political consensus that was reached ahead of the elections. The party leadership has been recognising the contribution of its grassroots workers and would accord due priority to them in nominated posts based on merit, eligibility and dedicated service, the State TDP chief added.
