Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s mother, Roopi Soren, passed away after a prolonged illness at a private hospital in Ranchi. CM Soren shared the news of her sad demise in a post on his social media account X on Wednesday (October 7, 2026).
“After Baba left, Ma was my greatest shelter. Today, even that shelter has merged into the lap of nature,” Mr. Soren wrote on X.
Married to former Chief Minister late Shibu Soren on January 1, 1962, Roopi was admitted to a Hill View Hospital & Research Centre on September 18, 2026, after she complained of breathing difficulties and on Wednesday (October 7, 2026), she was put on ventilator support.
Leader of Opposition in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, Babulal Marandi, expressed deep grief over her death.
“The news of the passing of the mother of Chief Minister Hemant Sore ji has left me deeply distressed. In this hour of grief, our condolences are with the bereaved family. May the Lord grant a place at his holy feet to the departed soul and bestow upon the grief-stricken family the strength to bear this immense sorrow,” Mr. Marandi wrote on X.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad and his son Tejashwi Yadav, along with former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, also expressed their grief over the demise.
“In this hour of grief, the RJD stands with the bereaved family, and we pray to God to grant them the strength to bear this unbearable pain,” RJD stated in a press statement.
Jharkhand Congress leader and Health Minister Irfan Ansari in post on X said, “Extremely heartbreaking and soul-wrenching news of the passing away of the mother of the state’s beloved Chief Minister and my elder brother, Hemant Soren ji, has shaken me to my core. This is an irreparable loss for Jharkhand. In this hour of grief, I stand with the entire Soren family. The Soren family is my own family. I am at the hospital myself at this time of sorrow.”
He further said, “This news has torn my heart apart from within. It is impossible to express this immense pain in words. May God grant peace to the departed soul and give strength to my elder brother Hemant Soren ji and the entire Soren family to bear this boundless sorrow.”
Roopi Soren and Shibu Soren have three sons and a daughter. The eldest son, Durga Soren, was a prominent leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and served as an MLA from Jama; he passed away in 2009.
Hemant Soren is the second son, while the youngest son, Basant Soren, is an MLA from the Dumka assembly constituency. Their daughter, Anjani Soren, has also been associated with the JMM.
