Railway authorities removed a name board in Hindi atop the second entrance at the Thanjavur Railway Junction on October 8 following opposition to it from various organisations.
Tamil organisations had called for a demonstration at the junction on Thursday. However, when the issue was brought to the notice of railway junction authorities on Wednesday night, the officials said action would be taken on Thursday after consulting senior officials. Meanwhile, the DMK registered its protest and demanded the immediate removal of the Hindi name board.
On October 8, a group of DMK cadres staged a demonstration on the junction premises condemning the placing of the Hindi name board at a prominent location. Thanjavur MP S. Murasoli visited the junction on Thursday while the railway officials were busy removing the Hindi name board.
The Leftists Common Platform (LCP) thanked the Southern Railway for removing the name board. Display of the name board in Hindi atop the second entrance portico, where the replica of the Big Temple tower had been set up, was an act of Hindi imposition, it contended in a statement.
