The conductor of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus was killed as a tipper lorry crashed into it at Piranchery on Tirunelveli – Papanasam Highway on Thursday.
Police said senior conductor of the TNSTC bus proceeding from Tirunelveli to Papanasam A. Ajith Melwin Arthur, 52, of Kodumutti near Bethelpuram in Kanniyakumari district, who had been attached to the Valliyoor depot of TNSTC, was killed on the spot when a speeding tipper lorry rammed the bus at Kozhumadai near Piraanchery on Thursday morning.
A total of 22 passengers were also injured in the mishap.
After the commuters and the public alerted the police and the fire and rescue services, the injured passengers were rushed to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The injured passengers blamed the tipper lorry driver for the mishap as he lost the control of the vehicle.
District Collector Anand Mohan, on getting information about the accident, came to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital and met the victims. Dean of Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital Selvarajan explained to the Collector about the condition of the injured and the treatment being given to them.
Minister for Transport A. Vijay Thamizhan Parthibhan has condoled the death of Ajith Melvin Arthur. In a statement, the Minister said the untimely demise of the conductor in the accident was a great loss to the TNSTC and his family.
