The Dharwad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed Ola Electric to refund ₹1,03,999 paid by a Hubballi resident for an electric scooter, along with 10% annual interest, after finding deficiency in service and unfair trade practice.
The Commission also directed the company to pay ₹50,000 as compensation for the inconvenience and mental agony caused to the consumer, besides ₹10,000 towards litigation expenses.
The complaint was filed by Satish Miskin of Hubballi, who had purchased an Ola Electric scooter from the company’s outlet at Unkal Cross in Hubballi for ₹1,03,999.
According to the complaint, the scooter developed battery-related and other defects and was handed over to the company’s service centre for repairs. Despite repeated requests, the company allegedly failed to return the vehicle, stating that the required spare parts had not arrived.
When the complainant subsequently visited the service centre, he found it closed. His attempts to contact the company and ascertain the whereabouts of the vehicle were unsuccessful, while the scooter remained in the company’s possession.
The consumer filed a complaint before the Dharwad District Consumer Commission on January 22, 2026, seeking the return of his vehicle and action against the company for deficiency in service.
The Commission, comprising president Eshappa Bhute and members Vishalakshi A. Bolshetty and Prabhu S. Hiremath, observed that the complainant had purchased the vehicle by investing over ₹1 lakh for his personal convenience. The records showed that the scooter had developed battery and other defects and had been handed over to the company for repairs during the warranty period.
The Commission held that the manufacturer was obliged to rectify the defects and return the vehicle to the consumer. Retaining the vehicle without repairing and returning it amounted to deficiency in service and an unfair trade practice under the Consumer Protection Act, it said.
The Commission also took note of complaints regarding problems faced by consumers with Ola Electric scooters and proceedings before consumer authorities and courts concerning the quality and service of such vehicles.
On these grounds, the Commission ordered Ola Electric to refund the scooter’s purchase price of ₹1,03,999 with 10% interest, besides paying ₹50,000 as compensation and ₹10,000 towards litigation costs.
