Minister for Culture and Tourism P.C. Vishnunadh said here on Thursday (October 8, 2026) that the State government would make sincere efforts and intervene to ensure justice for journalist K.M. Basheer, who was killed in a road accident in Thiruvananthapuram in 2019.
He was inaugurating a memorial meeting for Basheer at the Malappuram Press Club.
Mr. Vishnunadh said he had raised the issue in the Assembly on Basheer’s second death anniversary, and that the government would provide support in legal proceedings.
The Minister said he had known Basheer since his KSU days. He described him as a journalist who stood firm on his positions and was known for his gentle manner.

The Minister said press freedom in the country was facing a decline. He added that the media still had opportunities to bring facts before the public, but competition among media organisations and its effect on news coverage needed discussion.
MLAs Kurukkoli Moideen and V.S. Joy, Kerala Waqf Board Chairman K.S. Hamza, Kerala Muslim Jamaat State general secretary Syed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari, Wandoor Abdurahman Faizy, T.K. Abdul Gafoor, Jamal Karulai, and Jaleel Kallengalpadi spoke.
A seminar on ‘Social conscience and media ethics’ was held as part of the programme. Kerala Union of Working Journalists State general secretary Suresh Edappal and Malappuram Press Club secretary V.P. Nisar were present.
