Kanniyakumari District Collector M. Prathap inspected the social justice hostels at Punnai Nagar in Nagercoil on Friday.

In Kanniyakumari district, under the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, social justice hostels for girls are functioning in Suchindram, Nagercoil, Thingalnagar and Kanniyakumari. Hostels for college students are operating in Nagercoil (units I and II), and Thuckalay, while a hostel for ITI students is functioning in Konam.

Meanwhile under the Backward Classes Welfare Department college girls hostels are functioning in Nagercoil, Chunkankadai, Kovalam, Palkulam and Agastheeswaram. Boys hostel for school and college students are being operated in Azhagappapuram and Palkulam respectively.

The Collector conducted a surprise inspection at the social justice hostel for school girls functioning under the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department and the college girls hostel operating under Backward Classes Welfare Department in Punnai Nagar. He reviewed the basic amenities, including purified drinking water facility, toilet facilities and overall cleanliness.

He also conducted an inspection at the kitchen to check whether it was maintained in a clean and hygienic manner and reviewed the quality of the food served to the students. The department officials were instructed to serve the students as per the prescribed meal schedule.

The Collector interacted with students and enquired about the quality, taste and quantity of the food served to them, including the evening snack. He also asked whether they faced any difficulties or had any specific requirements at hostels. He advised the students to concentrate on studies.

The hostel warden was instructed to encourage students to exercise and engage in recreational activities. The warden was also asked to set aside specific hours in the evenings for sports and games.
