A centenary year souvenir was released during the centenary celebration of Dr. E. M. Abdullah founder of the Syed Ammal Trust at Syed Ammal Engineering College near  Ramanathapuram on Friday.

The centenary of Dr. E. M. Abdullah, founder of the Syed Ammal Trust, was celebrated at Syed Ammal Engineering College, Ramanathapuram, on Friday, October 9, with tributes being paid to his enduring contributions to education, healthcare and social service.

A documentary film portraying the life and achievements of Dr. Abdullah was screened during the celebration. Speakers hailed the founder as he was born into a poor family and developed a strong commitment to hard work and perseverance from an early age. He excelled in his studies, securing first rank at school, and went on to pursue medicine.

The speakers also traced the founder’s days in college, where he demonstrated leadership qualities and was elected a student leader. After completing his medical education, Dr. Abdullah established a hospital in his mother’s name to provide medical services, particularly to the poor and underprivileged. His commitment to social welfare extended to education as well.

His initiatives laid the foundation for the growth of institutions under the Syed Ammal Trust, which continues to serve society through education, medical care, healthcare services and welfare initiatives. The centenary celebration provided an opportunity to remember his vision and reaffirm the commitment to carrying forward his legacy.

Mr. Chelladurai Abdullah welcomed. Senior physician T. Aravind Raj offered felicitation. Actor Senthil, who attended as the guest of honour, recalled his friendship with Dr. Abdullah and shared personal experiences that reflected the warmth of their association. Prof. M. Salihu, former Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University spoke.

As part of the celebration, Suki Sivam addressed on the topic, “Which plays a greater role in students’ progress: home or society?” The discussion examined the influence of family and society on students’ character, values, academic development and future aspirations. .

Faculty members, doctors and nurses who had rendered more than 25 years of dedicated service in the institutions under the Syed Ammal Trust, were honoured.

Babu Abdullah, Syedha Abdullah, Rajathi Abdullah and others participated. Chinnadurai Abdullah proposed a vote of thanks.
