The Udupi Town police arrested two persons on Saturday for allegedly robbing an elderly woman of her gold chain by posing as personnel involved in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The police identified the accused as Vadiraj Ganiga, 44, of Puttur village in Udupi taluk and Sachin, 30, of Pudu village in Kaup taluk.
According to the complaint filed with the Udupi Town police by Shrikant Karanth, two men visited the house where his mother, Shanta Karanth, stayed alone, at 3.30 p.m. on Wednesday Claiming to be personnel involved in SIR, they handed over forms related to the exercise. When Ms. Shanta went inside the house to speak with her son, the accused entered and pushed her down. They snatched her gold chain, worth ₹4 lakh rupees, and fled from the scene.

A police team led by Udupi Town PSI Bharatesh Kankanawadi examined surrounding CCTV footage and gathered other evidence to zero in on Ganiga and Sachin, arresting them on Saturday. Authorities recovered the gold chain, an Ola electric scooter, and two mobile phones from the accused. They were produced before a jurisdictional magistrate court, which remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody.
In a press release, the police said that Ganiga lived near Ms. Karanth’s house and knew she lived alone, having previously taken a loan from her and several others. The second accused had also borrowed money from multiple individuals. The police said that the pair committed the robbery to clear their debts and lead a lavish lifestyle.
