Around 200 conservancy workers were detained by police at Korukkupet in Chennai on Monday (September 8, 2025) while they held a hunger strike, continuing to demand permanency of employment and opposing privatisation. They were employed under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) in Royapuram and Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar zones.

According to Uzhaippor Urimai Iyakkam, 13 women workers had begun the hunger strike and were detained by the police, even though the demonstration was held in the homes of workers. Many who had joined this strike were also detained, the organisation added in a statement.

“The detainees were taken to multiple locations including the Kathirvel Colony in Ward 102, a private community hall in Mugappair under Ward 93 and the Thanthai Periyar Community Hall in Anna Nagar West under Ward 101,” it said.

The workers reiterated they would continue their protests until the State government held talks with them and fulfilled their requests.
