
Volunteers clean up New Beach in Nagapattinam as part of a day-long programme conducted by the Department of Marine Science at Bharathidasan University, in association with the National Centre for Coastal Research on Saturday.

The Department of Marine Science in Bharathidasan University (BDU), in association with the National Centre for Coastal Research, functioning under the central Ministry of Earth Sciences, observed International Coastal Cleanup Day by conducting a cleaning programme at the New Beach in Nagapattinam on Saturday.
According to a university release, the activity was carried out simultaneously across more than 50 beaches in the east and west coast of India, including the Union Territories as per the Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar Mission.
The New Beach cleanup was launched by Nagapattinam Municipality chairman R. Marimuthu and Municipal Commissioner D. Leena Simon.
V. Rajesh Kannan, BDU Syndicate and Vice-Chancellor Committee Member of the university delivered the keynote address. Programme coordinator Professor R. Rajaram provided insights into the importance of keeping the coastal areas clean.
Over 200 students, researchers, and faculty members from university’s Department of Marine Science, ADM Women’s College, and E.G.S. Pillay Arts and Science College, Nagapattinam, actively participated in the event.
Volunteers from the Coastal Security Force, Nagapattinam Municipality, Rotary Club, Wildlife Sanctuary, Forest and Fisheries Departments, and women’s self-help groups joined the effort.
The collected waste was weighed and handed over to the Nagapattinam Municipality.
The programme included an awareness rally that was flagged off from the Nagapattinam Town Panchayat office.
