A large number of people paid their last respects to Koyilandy MLA Kanathil Jameela as her final rites were performed at the Kuniyil Kadavu Juma Masjid at Atholi in Kozhikode district on Tuesday evening.

Her body had been kept at a private hospital in Kozhikode city after her death due to cancer on November 30. Leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] took over the mortal remains by Tuesday morning. They were first taken to C.H. Kanaran Mandiram, the CPI(M)’s district committee office in Kozhikode city.

Speaker A.N. Shamseer, Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, Local Self-Government Minister M.B. Rajesh, Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes O.R. Kelu, Health Minister Veena George, Higher Education Minister R. Bindu, Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman, Registration and Museums Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran, Revenue Minister K. Rajan, Left Democratic Front convener T.P. Ramakrishnan, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, Shafi Parambil, MP, and senior CPI(M) leaders such as K.K. Shailaja, Elamaram Kareem, E.P. Jayarajan, P.K. Sreemathi, and C.S. Sujatha, among others, were present.

Thereafter, the body was taken to the Koyilandy Town Hall, and a private convention centre at Thalakkulathur where people paid their last respects to the departed leader. The mortal remains were later taken to her house at Thalakkulathur and in a procession to the mosque at Atholi.
