Residents of Arivoli Nagar, located near Mayilkal (Kuniamuthur) in Coimbatore, staged a protest on Wednesday demanding an underpass in their area.
They said that residents of Arivoli Nagar, where nearly 3,000 families reside, walk 1.5 to 2 km every day to take a bus as there is no bus service to their area. The first phase of the western bypass that begins at Madukkarai passes through the 2 km stretch. Since the residents will have to cross the bypass, they demanded an underpass at the junction. They submitted a demand to the district Collector a couple of months ago and the proposal was turned down by the Highways Department, they alleged.
The residents were assured on Wednesday that officials from the Departments concerned will visit Arivoli Nagar on Monday and hold talks with the residents and explore the different ways to find a solution.
