Residents of Nallurpalayam village in Kangayam Taluk have expressed resentment over what they describe as clandestine dumping of garbage and toxic wastes in an abandoned quarry in the village.
The dumping of wastes at the 40-feet deep abandoned quarry hamlet in Valliarachal village, despite court orders against it, had become noticeable in recent weeks.
According to the villagers, contamination of groundwater due to the discarding of industrial wastes and other toxic pollutants has forced them to source water from neighbouring village to maintain their livestock and cattle.
The authorities have not acted though their concerns were conveyed through several petitions, the villagers lamented.
In separate representations to the Mines Department and Revenue Department, the villagers have conveyed their fear of getting afflicted with dangerous ailments due to the air, water and soil pollution.
The villagers have warned of conduct of protests in case of failure of the authorities to take appropriate action.
