AAP and Congress flag ‘deteriorating’ law and order in national capital

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Delhi over the deteriorating law and order situation in the national capital after a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped at a park in Kalkaji in New Delhi on Monday evening (September 21, 2026).

AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj said the police acted as a political tool instead of acting against criminals operating openly across the city. “The Delhi Police register two new cases against me every month. The police have so much time, but these cases merely remain registered, and nothing moves beyond that. If a girl approaches the police and says that two goons from her neighbourhood are harassing her, the police will not register a case until a rape is committed,” Mr. Bharadwaj said. The BJP government maintained complete silence when such incidents occurred, he added.

The Congress said that the rape of four minors in a span of 10 days in the capital showed the worsening law and order, rising crimes against women and the failure of the government in protecting women. “Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s silence on the brutal sexual assaults on minor girls raises questions about the law and order situation in the capital despite a ‘triple-engine’ BJP government ruling the roost in Delhi. Unfortunately, the capital has turned into a den of criminals, for which Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and [Union] Home Minister Amit Shah cannot escape the blame,” Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said.

He added that data released by the Delhi Police made shocking revelations that, in 2025, 1,058 cases of rape were registered, while 13,396 cases of sexual harassment, torture, molestation, kidnapping and domestic violence were registered. “Multiple cases of rape of women and minors every day are very disturbing as Delhi has now earned the notorious label of ‘rape capital’ of the country.
