Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday (December 6, 2025) announced that a flyover at the Melamadai junction in Madurai, scheduled to be inaugurated on Sunday (December 7), would be named after freedom fighter Velu Nachiyar of Sivaganga, who fought bravely against the British.
According to a press release, the 950-metre-long flyover, constructed at a cost of ₹150.28 crore, has four lanes and is aimed at decongesting traffic at the Melamadai junction, which connects Sivaganga Road with the Aavin junction. The flyover is expected to ease traffic congestion on the Madurai-Thondi Road and from Goripalayam to Ring Road, the release added.
