Leaders of the Opposition (LoPs) must be appointed for the upcoming Winter Session of the Maharashtra Assembly as more than a year has passed since the Assembly election, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said on Saturday (December 6, 2025).
“Why is the government scared of the LoP despite having such a majority? The LoP must be appointed and we have been demanding this,” Mr. Thackeray said, adding that it was Constitutional post.
“If the government fails to appoint an LoP, it will be the first time that a session will be held without an LoP. If no LoP is appointed, then the posts of Deputy Chief Minister should also be abolished because it’s not Constitutional,” Mr. Thackeray added.
The Shiv Sena (UBT), with 20 MLAs, the most among the Opposition in the State, nominated senior lawmaker Bhaskar Jadhav as LoP to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The Congress nominated Satej Patil to the post of LoP in the Maharashtra Legislative Council after the term of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve ended in August.
Speaking on local body elections, Mr. Thackeray said that the Supreme Court must take suo motu notice of the “mess” in the electoral rolls in Maharashtra, and the Opposition should make a request to the court to not hold the local body elections until they were rectified.
The Supreme Court has ordered that elections to all local bodies in the State be held by January 31, 2026.
