Hundreds of cadre from Left parties and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) on Monday staged protests in Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai, urging the Union government to withdraw the four labour codes, which they termed “anti-worker”.
In Nagapattinam, the demonstration was held at Avuri Thidal by the CPI(M), CPI, VCK and CPI(ML). Former MLA and CPI(M) district secretary V. Marimuthu, CPI district secretary Sivaguru Pandian, VCK district secretary Nag. Arulselvan, and CPI(ML) district secretary J. Sivakumar led the agitation.
Participants raised slogans demanding that the Union BJP government roll back the “anti-labour” legislations and protect the rights earned by workers through long years of struggle.
A similar protest was held in Mayiladuthurai, in front of the Head Post Office, where cadre of CPI(M), CPI, VCK and CPI(ML-Liberation) joined hands.
CPI(M) State committee member V. Amirthalingam, CPI State executive member P.S. Masilamani, VCK State organisation secretary A.V. Abdul Nasser, and CPI(ML-L) State committee member N. Gunasekaran addressed the gathering .Speakers said the four labour codes diluted 29 existing labour welfare laws and favoured large corporate interests.
