The Coimbatore Corporation’s three major infrastructure projects are yet to receive funds from the Local Planning Authority (LPA), which is responsible for sanctioning and releasing project allocations, Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said.
He stated that a project report for laying roads worth ₹40 crore within Corporation limits has been prepared and submitted to the LPA for approval. About 80% of the work has been completed, but the funds are still pending.
Redevelopment of the Ukkadam Bus Stand is under way, but it also requires LPA funding. A proposal requesting ₹30 crore for upgrading the Gandhipuram Central Bus Stand—which will include 90 bus bays, 20 large commercial shops, 360 seating spaces, four staircases with lifts, 50 kiosks, five air-conditioned waiting halls, eight toilet blocks, seven feeding rooms, three control rooms, a CCTV room, an AV room, and designated areas for maintenance, ticketing, postal services, and department offices—has been submitted, but the funds have not yet been released.
In addition, funds for acquiring private lands and compensating landowners as part of the Sathyamangalam Road widening project from Textool Bridge to Old Sathy Road, estimated at ₹54 crore, have also not been released. “These projects can proceed only once the funds are released,” the Commissioner said.
