Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who holds the Water Resources portfolio, told the Legislative Council here on Thursday that he will inquire into the issue of reported over utilisation of Bhima waters by the neighbouring State of Maharashtra.
Replying to a question raised by member Talawar Sabanna under Rule 330 in the Council, Mr. Shivakumar said that what has been pointed out by the member is an issue of serious nature and that he will inquire into it and get a report on the said utilisation of more than allocated share of waters by Maharashtra.
Earlier, raising the issue, Mr. Sabanna said that while the allocated share of water in the Bhima under the Bachawat Commission is 95 tmcft for Maharashtra and 15 tmcft for Karnataka, the neighbouring State is utilizing close to 200 tmcft by diverting water to the Sina river through a tunnel.
Consequently, the farmers of Vijayapura, Yadgir and Kalaburagi districts are facing water scarcity, he said and urged the Minister to send a team to look into the issue.
