The Q Branch police have arrested a youth with 100 kg of ganja even as it was about to be smuggled to Sri Lanka.
After getting information about smuggling of ganja in two-wheelers, Q Branch Police team, led by Vijaya Anita, was patrolling along the Madurai – Thoothukudi Highway on Thursday. When they spotted a car, two bikes and a few unidentified persons in a secluded place near SIPCOT Bypass Road, the police team moved close to the spot.
On seeing a vehicle coming towards them, the gang, which was loading the packets containing ganja in the bikes from the car, escaped. While one Sudharshan, 28, of Vadakku Raja Street near Mattakkadai was nabbed, three others, including ‘Muttai’ Suresh of Thevar Colony in Thoothukudi, managed to escape. The police also seized 100 kg of ganja packed in 50 packets.
When the police grilled Sudharshan, he told the police that he and his associates were taking the ganja to be handed over to a trader who was smuggling the narcotic to Sri Lanka by boat through a few Thoothukudi-based fishermen.
Efforts are on to nab ‘Muttai’ Suresh and others.
