Kanniyakumari district police have secured convictions in 51 cases booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act this year. During the corresponding period last year, the conviction in POCSO cases stood at 16.
The successful convictions, which reflect the commitment to protect children and enforce the law, has led to a noticeable decline in POCSO cases across the district.
According to sources, the number of convictions in POCSO cases across four subdivisions of the district stands at Nagercoil 19, Kanniyakumari 12, Colachel 9 and Marthandam 11.
Speaking to The Hindu, Kanniyakumari District Superintendent of Police R. Stalin attributed the successful convictions to the ‘Nimir’ teams that had been deployed across the district.
The ‘Nimir’ initiative was launched by Mr. Stalin in April this year with the objective of proactive prevention of sexual crimes against minors. It also aimed at guiding affected minors and safeguarding their future.
The team, supervised by Additional Superintendent of Police Mathiyazghagan and Inspector Shanthakumari, comprises female police officers in the sub divisions. They identify and monitor minors lacking parental supervision and raise awareness of crimes punishable under the POCSO Act.
Mr. Stalin said that along with the ‘Nimir’ team, trial monitoring officers assigned in each division helped in effective follow-up of POCSO cases and assisted the child victims in court proceedings, enabling them to courageously testify against the accused. “In addition, review meetings are being conducted every Tuesday to analyse the progress of trials of POCSO cases across the district.”
Mr. Stalin further noted, “After the deployment of ‘Nimir’ teams, the number of POCSO crimes across the district has been significantly reduced. In the past few months, there were around seven POCSO cases registered across the district, compared to 16 to 17 cases registered before May this year.”
