Udupi is set to host a State-level belt wrestling competition for pre-university (PU) students at Mahatma Gandhi District Stadium in Ajjarakad on December 22.
Department of School Education (PU), Bengaluru, Deputy Director of Pre-University (DDPU) office, Udupi, and other organisations and institutions are jointly hosting the competition. More than 400 contestants from various districts will participate.
Speaking to reporters in Udupi on December 20, Maruthi, DDPU Education, said that for girls, the competition will be held in six categories, and for boys, the competition will be held in eight categories. Belt wrestling, he said, is a newfound game and gaining popularity in Bengaluru, Belagavi, and Chamarajanagar.
Mr. Maruthi added that not many have pursued belt wrestling in Udupi district; referees for the competition will arrive from Bengaluru. One match will go on for about two minutes and the competition will end by 6 p.m. on December 22.
He said trainers from Bengaluru taught the game to participants from Udupi district at Karkala.
