The body of a new-born baby girl, believed to be about four days old, was recovered from the Cauvery near the new bridge in the heart of Mayiladuthurai on Saturday.
The police said the infant’s body was wrapped in a large plastic bag and floating on the western side of the bridge. On being alerted, the police, with the assistance of sanitation workers, retrieved the body from the river.
On examination, the plastic bag was found to contain the body of the baby appeared to have been born only a few days earlier. The body was sent to the Government Hospital in Mayiladuthurai for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered and the police have taken up investigation.
