A vocal concert by P. Madhushree to the accompaniment of D.S. Gokulnath on mridangam and P. Ganesh on violin was held on the fourth day of Tamil Isai Sangam’s 51st anniversary celebrations.
Worshipping Lord Ganesa through Avvaiyar’s ‘Palum Theli Thenum’, Madhushree commenced with Papanasam Sivan’s ‘Muladhara murthi’ in ragam Hamsadwani pleading to the Lord to remove the sorrows of devotees. She went on to render ‘Thandava darisanam tamadam panna vendam’ in Ritigaula by Gopalakrishna Bharatiar, requesting Lord Nataraja for His vision of vigorous dance without any delay.
The song portrays the five manifestations of Srishti, Sthiti, Samhara, Illusion and Emancipation.
In her next rendition ‘Karunai puriya ithu tharunam’, she prayed to the presiding deity of Madurai, Goddess Meenakshi, for compassion/mercy in a composition by Neelakaanta Sivan in Varali. The ‘Chittaswaram’ added beauty to raga and showcased her talent.
The violinist followed her closely, which was appreciated by the audience.
With good alapana she rendered “Natamadit tirinda” by Papavinasa Mudaliyar, (a specialist in the “nindastuti” style of writing) in Kambhoji. In this kriti, he portrays the dancing posture of Lord Nataraja of Chidambaram and the possibilities that could have triggered the “ailment” in the left leg.
With a deep emotive raga alapana for Keeravani, she rendered “Devi neeye thunai” by Papanasam Sivan, with high octaves occasionally.
During the niravals viz, Devadhi devan Sundaresan, Malaya Dwajan ma thavame enunciated the raga well.
The Tani that followed showcased the abilities of both P. Ganesh and Gokulnath.
In quick succession, she rendered “Sokka vaikum kolam kana kidaikumo” by her guru Vidya Sri Raman.
The final pieces include ‘Ongi ulagalandha uthaman per paadi’ (Thirupavai), praising Tamil language through ‘Vazhga niranthara Vazhga Tamil (Mahakavi Bharathiar), Sri Arunagirinathar’s Thiruppugazh “Muththaiththaru’ (Thiruvarunai), ‘Thillana’ Madiruvarudan mamayilil vara’ by Lalgudi Jayaraman and ‘Kalayada kalviyum’ (Abirami Andadi padhigam).
The song selection of the vocalist, only Tamil, suited the Tamil Isai Sangam Vizha and the audience applauded it.
