Ministers Vangalapudi Anitha (Home), Anam Ramanarayana Reddy (Endowments) and Anagani Satya Prasad (Revenue) presented 10 breath analyser kits to each of the highway patrol police teams in Tirupati, on Tuesday.
As Tirupati district has 10 national highways and 13 State highways, the kits would be used by the patrol teams to check the motorcyclists and four-wheelers passing on the highways. Collector S. Venkateswar, Superintendent of Police (SP) L. Subbarayudu and Chandragiri MLA Pulivarthi Nani also participated in the event.
Ms. Anitha called road safety as a top priority topic of the State government, along with regulating alcohol consumption. She also called upon the youth to avoid rash driving under peer pressure.
Meanwhile, the SP said that cases would be registered against those caught driving under the influence of alcohol, and their driving licenses would stand suspended for a period of six months. “During the current year, 500 members died in road accidents and around 1,300 were injured in the district alone,” he said, attributing a larger chunk of cases to intoxication on the road.
Simultaneously, the department also identified 40 black spots and arranged barricades and signage boards to prevent accidents.
