Surat Police have arrested a 58-year-old real estate developer for allegedly obstructing traffic on a public road by bursting firecrackers to celebrate his son’s birthday, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on December 21 near Langar Circle in the Dumas area. A video of the celebration, which later went viral on social media, showed the developer stopping vehicles and setting off firecrackers on the busy stretch.

The accused was identified as Deepak Ijardar, a resident of Sultanabad. In the video, he is seen holding firecrackers and halting traffic to mark the birthday of his son, Dhyey Ijardar.

After the video came to the notice of the police, the Dumas police station registered a case and arrested Mr. Deepak Ijardar. He was later released on bail.

An official release stated that the firecrackers were burst on a public road near a post office in front of his residence, causing inconvenience to commuters and violating a notification issued by the Police Commissioner.

A case has been registered under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with disobedience to orders duly promulgated by public servants, police said.
