Vice-President of India C.P. Radhakrishnan on Monday (December 29, 2025) stressed the need for providing basic amenities to the poor and said that the amelioration of the have-nots should always be taken care of.

“Every citizen should be assured of food and shelter. The government continuously provides food, clothing, and shelter without interruption. We must offer even more care,” he said, after handing over keys of tenements to beneficiaries of a housing project under the Smart Cities Mission in Puducherry.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said Puducherry is seen as a centre of Franco-Indian culture, and this preserves the region’s cultural excellence eternally. “This sacred land provided a special place for great thinkers like Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, offering the world a philosophical vision that unities spiritual progress and human unity,” he said.

It was only after coming to Puducherry that poet Subramania Bharati breathed full freedom. It was during his 10 years’ stay in Puducherry that he ran newspapers like India and Vijaya. Some of the poet’s great works were born in Puducherry, he said.

Mr. Radhakrishnan said that during his stint as the Lt. Governor of Puducherry, he had taken several initiatives, including improvements to Aayi Mandapam and the development of Siddhar tourism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has provided more Smart City projects to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, thanks to his affection for the Tamil language, culture, and Tamils.

He said the Lt. Governor of Puducherry, during his recent visit to New Delhi, had held discussions on the projects to be implemented in the U.T. When the Prime Minister visits Puducherry, these projects will take shape, he added.

Earlier, the Vice-President arrived at the Puducherry Airport in an Air Force helicopter from Trichy around 10.00 a.m.

Lt. Governor K. Kailashnathan, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Speaker R. Selvam, Ministers A. Namassivayam, K. Lakshminarayanan, C. Djeacoumar, P.R.N. Thirumurugan, A. John Kumar, and Chief Secretary Sharat Chauhan were among those present at the airport to receive the Vice-President.
