“Why should the Indian Hovernment settle penalties imposed by the Sri Lankan Government regarding violation of regulations by [our] fishermen?,” asked Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying S.P. Singh Baghel.

Speaking to presspersons after interacting with fishermen and their families at Therkuvadi near Pamban here on Monday, he said the Union Government could not settle the penalties for the mistakes committed by the fishermen. “If we try to settle the fine amounts, then the same mistake will be committed by everyone,” he added.

Responding to a question on the steps taken by the Union Government to resolve the issue of fishermen arrests, he said the Union Government would hold bilateral talks with the Sri Lankan Government in the presence of Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Governments.

He received petitions from the affected fishermen’s families and assured them that he would work towards finding a solution to the problem.
