‘No accident, loss of life during new year celebration in Coimbatore city’

Coimbatore city did not witness motor vehicle accidents and loss of life during the New Year celebrations that extended from Wednesday evening to early hours of Thursday, according to the police. They stated that no law and order-related issues or crimes were reported during the New Year celebrations.

A total of 1,594 personnel, including senior officers, were stationed at various locations in the city to manage revellers and to avoid law and order issues. Vehicle checks were conducted at different locations to prevent rash and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The law and order police seized a total of 121 vehicles for offences such as rash driving and speeding and another 29 vehicles were seized after their drivers were found drunk.

The traffic police seized 45 vehicles as their drivers were under the influence of alcohol.

Police presence was heightened at 15 locations where the public gathered in large numbers for celebrations. Police personnel were also deployed in front of churches and temples where special prayer services were held. Four-wheel and beat patrol (two-wheeler) vehicles of each police station were also on the move throughout the night.

The bomb detection and disposal squad of the city police were on standby to deal with emergency situations.
