After a brief respite, temperatures have begun to plummet once again in the Munnar hill station. On Thursday morning, Chundavurrai, near Munnar, recorded the lowest temperature at 1°C.
Data from the United Planters’ Association of South India (UPASI) Tea Research Foundation show temperatures of 3°C at Silent Valley and the UPASI headquarters at Nallathanni in Munnar. Other areas, including Devikulam, Letchmi, and Sevenmallay, recorded 4°C, while the R&D centre in Mattupetty saw a drop to 5°C.
The current cold spell began on Monday, with early readings showing lows of 3°C at Devikulam, Silent Valley, and Chundavurrai. Officials noted that this dip follows nearly a 20-day gap in extreme cold weather for the region.
Earlier, in the second week of December, Munnar experienced a sub-zero spell with temperatures falling to -1°C. That chill had triggered a massive influx of tourists, and stakeholders are now hopeful for a similar boost. With the cold returning, the tourism sector anticipates increased arrivals through the last week of January and into February.
