A 47-year-old mechanic with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) was killed on Thursday morning after a bus he was repairing slipped off its support and fell on top of him at the K.K. Nagar bus depot.
Police identified the victim as Krishnan, a resident of Guduvanchery, who had been serving as a chief mechanic with the MTC for the past 16 years. According to the MGR Nagar police, the incident occurred around 10 a.m. while Krishna and a co-worker were carrying out repairs on a bus at the service station inside the depot.
A police source said the bus had been raised using multiple jacks, with its wheels secured. While Krishna was working beneath the vehicle, one of the jacks reportedly loosened, causing the bus to collapse on him. Though he tried to move away, he was crushed on the spot.
Fellow workers rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The police later recovered the body and sent it to a government hospital for a post-mortem. An inquiry has been initiated to ascertain if there was negligence.
