Over 300 register for Den Den Swim event

The 3rd edition of ‘Den Den’ Open Sea Swimming Championship will be held at Surf Club Beach in Tannirbhavi on Monday.

The open sea championship is held every year near the place where Den Den ship sank in Tannirbhavi in 2017.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, Mangaluru Surf Club President Padmanabha Nayak said 8-km swim has been introduced in this year’s event. This is in addition to 500 metres, 2-km., 4-km and 6-km swim categories. The 500 metres swim will be for first timers, while the other categories will be for seasoned swimmers. Those participating in categories beyond 500 meter have been told to submit fitness certificate, Mr. Nayak said.

As many as 34 boats will be placed along the route, and 20 life guards will be in the sea to ensure safety of all participants. The participants have been told to use tow floats, which makes it easy for life guards to identity all participants in the sea. Indian Coast Guards will also be involved in safety for participants in the sea. KMC Hospital will provide on-site ambulance service and emergency medical support.

A total of 318 persons from Mangaluru and other parts of the country have registered for the event. The events will start at 6 a.m. and end by 11 a.m. The number of registered participants this year was double of the number of participants for the event held last year, Mr. Nayak said.
