A 45-year-old labourer died and two others were injured after a portion of dug-up sand caved in on them near Thaneerpandal in Perambalur on Tuesday.
Police identified the deceased as Velusamy of Kalarampatti in Perambalur district. A group of labourers were involved in the work of removing an underground petrol tank by putting up a temporary structure in a defunct petrol outlet. Sand was being dug out for the work.
Police sources said a portion of sand that was dug out and kept near the opening of the pit caved in on Velusamy and two other labourers in the afternoon. Velusamy got trapped under the sand and died, while the other two labourers sustained injuries.
A team of firefighters were involved in the rescue operation. The body of Velusamy was retrieved from the spot sent to Government Hospital, Perambalur for autopsy. Perambalur police are investigating.
