Over 800 candidates got placed at a mega job fair organised by the district administration at Francis Xavier Engineering College here on Saturday.

Recruiters from MRF, Britannia, Vikram Solar, T. P. Solar and other leading companies selected their workforce for a monthly salary ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹70,000.

Handing over the offer letters, District Collector Anand Mohan, whose career started with a humble salary of ₹1,000 a month during his school days, appealed to the selected candidates to join the companies even if their initial salary was not very impressive and if the workplaces were located in other parts of Tamil Nadu.

ā€œDuring previous job fairs held in the past, only 50% of the selected candidates reported for duty at the workplaces either in Tirunelveli or other areas of Tamil Nadu while others did not want to move out of Tirunelveli even for their livelihood and better living conditions. Even though your starting salary is not attractive now, the experience you gain in these positions will become the launch pad for your bright future. Hence, accept the offer letters and report for duty on the prescribed day,ā€ Mr. Anand Mohan appealed.

The Collector said the companies establishing their units in Tirunelveli district are being requested to give preference to local youth in recruitment. He also informed that land acquisition for upcoming SIPCOT Industrial Estates at Nanguneri and Moolaikkaraipatti had reached the final stages.

A total of 188 employers participated in the job fair to recruit 884 candidates, including 538 men, 346 women, from the pool of 2,412 candidates, including 1,419 men and 993 women. Another 123 short-listed candidates will have to undergo one more round of interview before receiving the placement order.

Tirunelveli MP C. Robert Bruce, MLAs Reddiyarpatti V. Narayanan of Nanguneri and R.S. Murughan of Tirunelveli and chairman of SCAD Group of Institutions Cletus Babu were present.
