The Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM) has reaffirmed that it is a School of Excellence of the Bharathidasan University (BDU) as defined by the varsity’s statutes.

This has been communicated to the Registrar of BDU by the Director of BIM recently, citing decisions arrived at a meeting of the BIM Board of Governors held on November 15, 2025.

The communication comes in the midst of recent controversies raised in the media over BIM’s legal status and its relationship with the Bharathidasan University.

According to the communication, the Board unanimously approved the points agreed between representatives of BDU and BIM held at the office of the Secretary of the Department of Higher Education in Chennai on November 12, 2025. It decided to make certain amendments in the Memorandum of Association and the Rules of the BIM (Tiruchi) Society to redefine certain parameters of the relationship between the two institutions. Sources said that the proposed changes were to be implemented with immediate effect.

As per the amendments, the vice-chancellor (V-C) of BDU or a senior faculty member nominated by the V-C, will be a member of the Board of Governors of BIM (Tiruchi) Society, according to the minutes of the meeting, signed by BIM director and member secretary Asit K. Barma, and notified as approved by BDU registrar (in-charge) R. Kalidasan.

The V-C will nominate one faculty member each to BIM’s Academic Council and the Board of Studies. A core group would be formed with four faculty members (two from BIM nominated by the director, and two from BDU nominated by the V-C) to work on procedural requirements.

The roster of admitted students and exam results for BDU-affiliated programmes offered by BIM are to be shared with the university. The required admission fee will be paid as per BDU norms. The examination results of the students admitted for programmes (affiliated with Bharathidasan University) offered by BIM will be shared with the university.

The BIM has requested the university to approve the BIM’s change of address and addition of the new campus coming up at Kalamavur and increase the student intake for BIM’s existing MBA programme at the new campus from 120 to 180. It also sought approval for new MBA and Executive MBA programmes to be offered at BIM-BHEL campus and allow BIM to continue as a research centre with the unviersity.

BIM would also make the necessary amendments to its by-law, said the minutes.

BDU would withdraw a writ appeal it had filed against BIM in 2022, related to the issuance of degree certificates submitted by the latter for the years 2018-2019 and 2019-2021.
