A ₹1,348-crore Jal Jeevan Mission project to provide drinking water to 15 grama panchayats in Kozhikode district will be partially commissioned next month.
As part of a review of the project’s progress, District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh recently visited the work site of the 100 MLD water treatment plant at Peruvannamuzhi. Jal Jeevan Mission superintending engineer P.C. Biju informed the District Collector that the project would be partially commissioned by March 31. Mr. Singh reviewed the project’s technical aspects as well as the progress of the allied works.
Once completed, the project will ensure a reliable and safe supply of drinking water to around five lakh people in Ulliyeri, Moodadi, Kayanna, Atholi, Panangad, Koorachundu, Chengottukavu, Chemancheri, Thikkodi, Arikkulam, Nochad, Keezhariyur, Meppayur, Changaroth, and Koothali panchayats. The project has been designed to ensure the supply of 100 litres of water per person per day.
The project draws its water from the Peruvannamoozhi reservoir. Water will be pumped from the reservoir through a floating intake system and treated at a 100 MLD–capacity water treatment plant. The treated water will then be taken to storage tanks in the project areas through gravity main pipelines. From there, drinking water will be supplied through distribution pipeline networks to a total of 1,26,918 connections, as envisaged in the project design.
Officials said that of the 31 works included in the project, 24 were currently in progress. So far, water connections have been provided to 1,26,918 households. Work on the floating intake and raw water pumping – main key components of the water treatment plant – has been 90% completed. Of the 96 km main distribution pipeline, 57 km has already been laid. Under the 3,304 km distribution network for supplying water to households, pipes have been laid over 2,009 km.
Officials informed the District Collector that delays in obtaining the required clearances from various departments were creating hurdles for the project.
The Har Ghar Jal scheme, a component of the Jal Jeevan Mission that aims to provide 100% household tap connections, has already been completed in Kunnummal and Thurayur panchayats in the district. The project is currently under implementation in Kakkur, Kakkodi, Olavanna, Kuruvattur, Perumanna, and Kadalundi panchayats.
