A.P. Jeevandan has crossed 300 organ transplantations in 2025 calendar year, a record in the State’s Medical and Health Department’s history.

Minister for Health Satya Kumar Yadav termed the achievement a “historic milestone for public healthcare in Andhra Pradesh”. This is a testament to strong institutional systems, medical excellence and the life-saving impact of organ donation, he added.

The number of deceased donors saw a steady increase year-on-year, with the highest being 93 in 2025. The total number of donors between 2020 and 2025 was 244, of whom 175 were male and 61 were female. The total number of organs retrieved was 795. Of this, 301 were retrieved in 2025 itself.

The 51-60 age group had the highest number of deceased donors at 52. The lowest number was in the 11-20 age group at 21.

The total number of live organ transplantations during 2020-25 was 1,740, which includes 1,697 kidney and 43 liver transplantations. “The live transplants pertain mostly to family members or close relatives, whose blood group matches with that of the patient. Though there is an increase in awareness among the public on organ donation, the response is far from satisfactory,” said K. Rambabu, Chief Transplant Coordinator, A.P. Jeevandan.

“Nearly 50% of road accident victims go into brain-death. If even a small proportion of these individuals donate organs, there will be no organ shortage. Unfortunately, due to religious beliefs, superstitions and social issues, family members and relatives shy away from organ donation,” he says.

The Visakha Institute of Medical Science (VIMS) is the first hospital and the only hospital in the government sector in A.P. to conduct a liver transplant surgery, added Dr. Rambabu, who is also Director of VIMS.
