Residents of Muthumani Town in Senthanneerpuram have expressed concern over the increasing encroachments on the roads in the locality. Abandoned vehicles and garbage dumps occupy the roadsides here.

At present, the Muthumani Town neighbourhood has become filled with vehicles said to be seized by a private finance company.

Cars, auto-rickshaws, bulldozers, and even school buses parked in a wild proliferation across both sides of the roads, affecting the flow of regular traffic. A thick layer of dust covers most of the vehicles, and in some instances, plants have grown around them.

“Water tankers and buses are unable to enter the area because of these abandoned vehicles. We are also afraid to send our children out after sunset because anti-social elements are loitering here,” rued a resident.

To make matters worse, heaps of garbage can also be seen in and around the vehicles, besides the empty stretches towards the back of the neighbourhood.

Muthumani Town has 13 cross streets. It is understood that one half of the land where the seized vehicles are parked, comes under the purview of the railways.

When contacted, senior officials of Tiruchi Corporation told The Hindu that cleaning drives are being held at regular intervals in Muthumani Town, and awareness programmes would be organised for residents about the health and environmental hazards of littering. The abandoned vehicles would be removed in the coming weeks, they added.
