The absence of Mayor and the five zone chair persons in the Corporation has stalled the regular functioning of Madurai Corporation, said AIADMK MLA V. V. Rajan Chellappa here on Monday.
Speaking to media persons, he said that the non-conduct of the monthly council meeting for the last three months at the Corporation had worsened the situation and the city is stinking. The staffs are not obeying the diktats of superior officials. The garbage is not lifted as it should be from many wards. Residents have been crying about the unhygienic conditions prevailing in their streets and wards.
The DMK government has proved its inefficiency and maladministration. When the elected representatives (councillors) are there, what prevented the government from appointing a Mayor. Why is the DMK’s allies are keeping quiet. Are they not interested in people’s welfare, Mr Chellappa asked.
The DMK has two ministers in Madurai and infighting within the ruling party functionaries and the groupism between the two ministers and their supporters had made the situation worse.
Not a single road in the main thoroughfare in the city is motorable. The road users are horrified by the prevailing condition. The Chief Minister inaugurated the Mullaperiyar drinking water project (which was AIADMK’s project), with much fanfare, but in reality, many wards have complaints of non-supply of the water, he claimed.
The SIT (Special Investigation Team) formed by the police on direction of the High Court Bench to probe into the irregularities in Madurai Corporation appears to have gone in cold storage. The DMK has emptied the Corporation coffers and the tax paying citizens money is looted.
He said that the HR&CE Minister P. K. Sekar Babu had announced to build rope car for Thiruparankundram temple, and sanctioned ₹5 crore, but had not visited even once. After becoming the minister, he had not visited the important temple here and reviewed the activities. It was unfortunate, he charged.
The DMK regime has built a library in the name of Karunanidhi and an arena for the jallikattu sports. What else, did they do for Madurai. On the contrary, when Edappadi K Palaniswami was the Chief Minister for about four and half years, the then government had spent nearly ₹8000 crore. Soon, the election would bring fortune to the people of Madurai and the lost sheen would be restored under the leadership of Mr Palaniswami, he added.
