Accused in caste killing crime attacks aged SC man in Ramanathapuram

A man, who figured in a caste killing crime a few years ago, has been cited as a prime accused in an assault case in Ramanathapuram district.

Evidence, an NGO in Madurai, has in a press release on Friday stated that Chellamuthu (61), a Scheduled Caste, was working as a parotta master in a restaurant in Ramanathapuram. On September 13, when he was on duty, a person visited the restaurant at around 10 p.m. and indulged in a wordy altercation with Chellamuthu and ended up on assault with wooden logs.

When Chellamuthu had approached the police station, a policewoman had suggested him to approach the District Police Office and lodge a complaint.

However, on the following day, due to uneasiness, Chellamuthu went to Ramanathapuram Government Medical College and Hospital. After four days, he was discharged by the doctors even after Chellamuthu had expressed difficulty in breathing among other issues.

Again, when he was at home, he suffered discomfort following which his wife rushed him to the hospital. This time, the doctors prescribed a CT scan, which revealed ‘serious’ issues and recommended admission in Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai.

Since he was admitted in the GRH, Chellamuthu has been kept in the ICCU and doctors on Friday stated that the condition was critical and that they could spell out the next course of action only after 48 hours.

The Evidence executive director A. Kathir said that the police should immediately arrest the prime suspect identified as Dinesh Kumar, who figured in a caste killing crime a few years ago. The police should also detain the accused under the Goondas Act. The State government should give ₹25 lakh as compensation to Chellamuthu and also ensure the best treatment.
